Support Teacher

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Support Teacher to join our UK-based special needs school, specialising in supporting students with ADHD, autism, and other learning differences. The successful candidate will work closely with lead teachers, therapists, and support staff to create a nurturing and structured learning environment that meets the individual needs of each student.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist lead teachers in planning and delivering tailored lessons that accommodate various learning styles and abilities.
  • Provide one-on-one and small-group support to students, reinforcing concepts and assisting with classroom activities.
  • Implement Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and behaviour management strategies as directed by lead teachers and specialists.
  • Foster a calm, structured, and engaging learning environment that encourages student participation and progress.
  • Support students with daily routines, including transitions between activities, organisation, and social interactions.
  • Use positive behaviour reinforcement techniques and assist in de-escalating challenging situations when needed.
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and parents to monitor and report student progress.
  • Assist with adaptive learning tools and assistive technology where required.
  • Participate in staff training and development programmes to stay updated on best practices in special education

Requirements

  • Education: Minimum of a Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, CACHE Level 3 Diploma, or a bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Psychology, Child Development, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience: Prior experience working with children with ADHD, autism, or other special educational needs (SEN) is highly desirable.

Skills

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to build trusting relationships with students.
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to different learning styles and needs.
  • Familiarity with sensory integration techniques and behaviour management strategies.
  • Basic knowledge of assistive technology and specialised learning tools.

Certifications (preferred):

  • Training in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), TEACCH, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), or Makaton.
  • Safeguarding and child protection training.
  • Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) training.
  • First Aid qualification (Paediatric First Aid preferred).
